New York Loan Fund: Small Businesses and Small Residential Landlords Programs

New York Forward Loan Fund (NYFLF) is a new economic recovery loan program aimed at supporting New York State small businesses, nonprofits and small residential landlords as they reopen after the COVID-19 outbreak and NYS on PAUSE.

NYFLF targets the state’s small businesses with 20 or fewer full-time equivalent (FTE) employees (90% of all businesses), nonprofits and small residential landlords that have seen sharp reduction in rental income.

NYFLF is providing working capital loans so that small businesses, nonprofits and small landlords have access to credit as they reopen. These loans are available to small businesses, and nonprofits that did not receive a U.S. Small Business Administration Paycheck Protection Program of greater than $50,000 or an Economic Injury Disaster Loan (EIDL) for COVID-19 of any amount, except for EIDL advance grant of up to $10,000, and small residential landlords.

Eligible small businesses and small residential landlords can apply for a 60-month, no-fee loan with a 3% fixed interest rate; while eligible non-profits can apply for a 60-month, no-fee loan at 2% fixed interest. The maximum loan amount is $100,000. Loan funds can be used for working capital including payroll, operating and emergency maintenance, property taxes, utilities and costs associated with refitting physical space to follow social distancing guidelines.

Presentation: Increasing ABLE Account Savings through Employment during COVID-19

ABLE-Webinar-Kathy-DeAngelo

From the ABLE National Resource Center:  "This webinar will review the basic rules for funding an ABLE account from contributions and earned income. Information about ease of access to savings and investments to address COVID-19 expenses will be shared, as well as best practices on integrating ABLE accounts into employment services for customers with disabilities. The webinar will also include how ABLE savings helps people with disabilities to begin and maintain employment and engage in career development to maximize their earnings, use of work supports and savings potential, including savings for retirement."

In this webinar you will hear from our Disability Resource Coordinator (DRC) Kathy DeAngelo!

“The most important thing I tell other service providers who work on employment for people with disabilities, is that here at CDO we tie financial literacy into every aspect of our work. And if you are a person with a disability, we want to talk to you about ABLE accounts and use the resources of the ABLE National Resource Center. We really believe that connecting money to people’s hopes and dreams and goals makes it a reality. You can’t have one without the other.”

Tips to Make Presentations More Accessible

presentation-1794128_1280

The University of Washington gathered suggestions from several popular presenters. about how to make presentations more accessible.

Here are a few that are easy to follow:

  • Minimize the number of slides. No one wants to be shot with a fire hose while trying to understand your talk.
  • Minimize the amount of text on slides. When you advance a slide, pause to let people read it before saying anything. This will allow people who are deaf and everyone else in the audience to read the slide before you start talking.
  • Avoid presenting images of complex charts or tables. Make graphics as simple as possible. No one wants to read a complicated graphic when there are only a few important facts about it.
  • Make sure that videos are captioned and audio described. Sometimes it is good to give a brief description of what is in the video before it is played. This will help audience members to establish a context for what comes next.
  • Ensure the question and answer period is accessible. If there is a microphone for questioners, make sure they use it. Otherwise, repeat the question so everyone can hear it/it gets interpreted.
  • Face people with hearing impairments, and avoid covering your mouth, so they can see your lips. Avoid talking while chewing gum or eating.
  • Speak clearly at a normal volume. Speak louder only if requested.
  • When using an interpreter, speak directly to the person who is deaf; when an interpreter voices what a person who is deaf signs, look at the person who is deaf, not the interpreter.

This 10-minute video from AHEAD will also give you all sorts of tips and advice on how to make your presentations engaging and accessible to all of your audience.
